Mr Stuart Farmer, BSC, MBA, PGCE, CSciTeach

Stuart Farmer is the headof Physics at Robert Gordon’s College, Aberdeen.

Following graduation from the University of St Andrews and Dundee College of Education, Stuart has taught in Kinross High School, Peterhead Academy, Alford Academy and Robert Gordon’s College. Throughout his teaching career Stuart has been actively involved in a wide variety of professional activities beyond day-to-day teaching.  He has been a member of the Association for Science Education (ASE) since he started teaching in 1984 and is currently a Trustee and Chair of its Council.  He is also a member of ASE’s Assembly and its Registration Board.  Stuart is the Treasurer of the Institute of Physics (IOP) in Scotland, a member of IOP’s Scottish Education Committee and the IOP’s Teacher Network Co-ordinator for Grampian and the Northern Isles.  Such involvement in ASE and IOP has allowed Stuart to organise and deliver sessions at many teacher continuing professional development (CPD)events supporting science teachers and sharing best practice in science education across Scotland and beyond. 

Stuart has been involved in major curriculum and assessment developments in Scotland.  He chaired the SQA Physics Panel for seven years seeing through its transition from that of the Scottish Examination Board.  He was a member of the Higher Still Specialist and Reference Groups for Physics. More recently he has been a Steering Group member of the Optoelectronics College and has contributed significantly to its teaching materials, apparatus design and to the associated teacher CPD workshops. 

Stuart has been a member of the Science and Engineering Education Advisory Group (SEEAG)which produced the report “Supporting Scotland’s STEM Education and Culture” in February 2012.

He is a Board member of Satrosphere, Aberdeen’s Science Centre
