Louise is Professor of Sustainable Biotechnology at the University of Edinburgh, and leads the College of Science and Engineering’s Science for Sustainability Hub. She is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology and the Higher Education Academy, and a member of the BBSRC’s Strategy Advisory Panel for Advanced Manufacturing and Clean Growth and of the EPSRC’s Strategic Advisory Team for the Manufacturing & Circular Economy research theme. She is also an Executive Board member of the European Federation of Biotechnology (EFB), an emeritus member of the Royal Society of Edinburgh’s Young Academy of Scotland (YAS), and an advisory board member for both SynBioUK and the European Synthetic Biology Society (EUSynBioS). 

Louise holds an EPSRC Fellowship in engineering for sustainability and resilience and her research seeks to develop biological routes for the recovery of metals from used lithium ion batteries and for the valorisation of industrial wastes and by-products. She began her academic journey with an MChem from the University of Oxford, followed by a DEA and a PhD in Biochemistry from the Université de Liège, Belgium. She worked as a research associate at the Universities of Leeds and Glasgow before joining the University of Edinburgh as a lecturer.
