Professor Gareth Harrison is Bert Whittington Chair of Electrical Power Engineering at the University of Edinburgh. He has held a range of executive leadership roles within the School of Engineering, most recently as Head of School. 

His research addresses the challenge of integrating renewable energy reliably and sustainably, and involves emerging industrial and policy questions. He has participated in a wide range of UK and EU research consortia including as Associate Director of the EPSRC National Centre for Energy Systems Integration, and led the EPSRC Adaptation and Resilience in Energy Systems project, examining climate impacts on energy system resilience.

He has made contributions to industrial and learned society committees. These include the Engineering Policy Group Scotland, the Royal Society of Edinburgh Inquiry into Scotland’s Energy Future, the Royal Academy of Engineering Working Group on Wind Integration and the SSE Transmission RIIO-T2 User Group. 

Professor Harrison is a Chartered Engineer, a Fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology, a Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and an emeritus member of the Royal Society of Edinburgh’s Young Academy of Scotland.

Professor Harrison joined the SSAC on 1 March 2025.
