Melanie Simms is Professor of Work and Employment at the Adam Smith Business School, University of Glasgow. She is Dean of Research in the College of Social Science. Her research focuses on how both workers and employers shape employment policy and practice in Scotland, the UK and beyond. She is particularly interested in vocational education and training, and how young people make their transitions from education to employment. Increasingly she is focused on understanding the future of work and the challenges this brings across the economy and society.
Across all of her activities, she is committed to linking academic research with policy and practice. She has advised the European Foundation for the Improvement of Living and Working Conditions and has written extensively for both academic and practitioner audiences. She is a Fellow of the British Universities Industrial Relations Association, an Academic Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, and a Chartered Manager.
